Recommended (alphabetically listed)
| Admiral Farragut Inn 31 Clarke Street Tel: 401 848 8000 3 night minimum, ranging from $195-$325 | The Clarkeston, the Admiral Farragut, the Cleveland House and the Wynstone are owned by the same individual and they all have the same decor and slightly authentic but somehow a little "off" given the steep price tag. While overall a nice group of B&Bs, count on things like nice furniture but a strange carpet choice or a jacuzzi located in your room, not in the bathroom where it belongs! |
| The Beech Tree and Bayberry
Inns 34 Rhode Island Avenue & 20 Kay Street Tel: 401 847 9794 3 night minimum. Beech Tree: $185-$295 and The Bayberry: $225-$295 | We have not been in The Beech Tree Inn, but both Matt and I liked their slightly higher-end inn The Bayberry. Warm innkeepers, a large old Victorian house, sizeable rooms and a truly lavish breakfast, the Bayberry and its sister, slightly less expensive inn, are good value for the money (in Newport anyway). Some rooms with jacuzzis and the Bayberry has a huge old porch like everyone dreams of sitting on. |
| Clarkeston 28 Clarke Street Tel: 401 849 7397 3 night minimum, ranging from $195 to $265 | The second of the four all owned by the same individual and the Clarkeston too has the same decor, slightly authentic but somehow a little "off" given the price tag. As mentioned above, this is a nice B&B, but do count on things like nice furniture but a strange carpet choice or a jacuzzi located in your room, not in the bathroom where it belongs! |
| The third in the quartet referenced above. |
| The Inn at Newport Beach Memorial Boulevard Tel: 401 846 0310 50 rooms, ranging from $59 (I might be wary of this one!) to $329 | Old beachside hotel in the "town" of Middletown, R.I. Literally just down the road from where Matt is staying, this hotel is clean and adequate, if a bit tired in its taste. Middletown is virtually part of Newport and St Columba's (where we are getting married) is in the Middletown countryside. Across the street from the public beach and the summer children's carnival. |
| La Farge Perry House 24 Kay Street Tel: 401 847 2223 3 night minimum, ranging $295 to $350 | Considered one of the best bed and breakfasts in Newport. Centrally located, each room is furnished uniquely with antiques - a little too "Laura Ashley" for my taste, but who ever said I had taste! Definitely expensive with a three night minimum. Some rooms with jacuzzis. |
| The Jail House Inn 13 Marlborough Street Tel: 800 427 9444 2 night minimum, ranging from $155 to $195 | A very basic, but more modern hotel in Newport's old Jail House. Great location and best of all, only a two-night minimum. Good for groups since there are a sizeable number of rooms for a smaller hotel (24 in total). |
| Mill Street Inn 75 Mill Street Tel: 401 849 9500 23 modern rooms, ranging from $265 to $325 2 or 3 night minimum (undecided at this time) | Given the hefty price tag and the modern decor (no signs left of the old Mill), we would skip this inn in favor of another on the list. Nothing wrong with it per se and it does have a great location, but we fear that without charm, it's over-priced! |
| Stella Maris Inn 91 Washington Street Tel: 401 849 2862 3 night minimum No credit cards, ranging from $195 to $225 8 rooms and a cottage for 2 people | No credit cards should say it all. A rambling, beautiful old house in the historic Thames Street district, just across from the Newport Harbor. A massive old house, with clean large rooms and an eclectic, somewhat cluttered style, we think this B&B is best suited to the more bohemian at heart! |
| The Victoria Ladies Inn 63 Memorial Boulevard Tel/Fax: 401 849 9960 E-mail: info@victorianladies.com 11 rooms, ranging from $135 to $195 3 night minimum | Very nice ladies (but of course) run this very Victorian bed and breakfast. Their taste runs to the floral and lace doiley combination, but the back garden is lovely! All rooms visible on the web page. |
| 3 night minimum, ranging from $195 to $425 | The Wynstone is the nicest and most expensive of the Clarkestone/Farragut/Cleveland House family. Still slightly peculiar, it remains a perfectly nice choice and is recommended by Frommers. |
