Newport is, unlike most cities in the summer, very busy
and Jazz Fest Weekend is more popular than all other summer weekends in
Newport,
so there are some special rules:
* Book Early - All of Newport and the surrounding area will be reserved by early Spring!
* Bed and Breakfasts offer better value but almost all have a three-night minimum
We only spent nine hours walking door-to-door-to-door in Newport and looked at every room in town!
Please tell our friend Victoria where you are staying!
| Adele Turner Inn 93 Pelham Street Tel: 401 847 1811 | Currently being renovated and this looks smashing! Great old house with 13 rooms currently ranging from $125 to $355 (be sure to confirm when you call since the rates may rise come May). Recently purchased by the owners of the top-ranked Cliffside Inn who will complete renovations by March. This will be a beautiful bed and breakfast in a great location. Some rooms have fireplaces and/or jacuzzis and one has a jacuzzi for two on an outside deck with 180 degree view of the harbor. |
| Castle Hill Inn & Resort 590 Ocean Drive Tel: 888 466 1355 3 night minimum, ranging from $250 to $495 | Lovely old inn on a hill overlooking the ocean and the bay. The inn itself features nine rooms, ocean-front dining and a bar. In addition there are separate cottages including several Harbor Houses (complete with Adirondack chairs on the porch) and eight Beach Houses which are right on the sandy shore of the Ocean. First class accommodation in Newport (voted one of the top 25 small hotels in North American by Conde Nastís Traveller) and priced accordingly. One warning: Castle Hill is located just off the storied Ocean Drive and just down the road from Fort Tyron & home to the Newport Jazz Festival. Please be sure to factor in extra travel time for the Jazz Fest traffic! |
| Cliffside Inn 2 Seaview Avenue Tel: 800-845-1811 3 night minimum 16 rooms, ranging from $225 to $500 | One half of this top-ranked inn has already been booked for Jazz Fest Weekend. If you have old-fashioned, high-quality taste and a wallet to match, this is the place to stay in Newport. Just off the famous Cliff Walk, the Cliffside Inn was long the summer home of the painter-recluse Beatrice Turner whose art still adorns the walls. A fireplace and whirlpool bath in every room, Cliffside has an eye for detail including a daily, lavish high tea and homemade peach and strawberry pancakes. Not a place to put bare feet on the taffeta-covered chaise, but fun in an entirely refined way. |
| Ivy Lodge 12 Clay Street Tel: 401 849 6865 3 night minimum, ranging from $195 to $300 10 rooms in total | Lovely, romantic, did I say lovely? bed and breakfast with the best stairwell in all of Newport. Value is great for the "just-off-Bellevue" location (home to the Newport "Cottages"). |
| James B Finch House 2 Touro Street Tel: 401 848 9700 3 night minimum, ranging from $135 to $195 7 rooms in total (one with an adjoining room for a young child) | Nice, simple, clean and free-spirited Victorian House located in town and right near the White Horse Tavern. Three night minimum with a reasonable (for Newport) price tag! |
| Melville House 39 Clarke Street Tel: 401 847 0640 3 night minimum, ranging from $145 (for shared bath) to $165 for rooms with a private bath 5 rooms in total | Early Americana at it's finest and quaintest - do not hesitate to book a room at this little bed and breakfast in the heart of Newport, right near the MUCH more expensive Vanderbilt Hall. |
| The Queen Anne Inn 16 Clarke Street Tel: 401 846 5676 3 night minimum, ranging from $145 to $290 for a two-room suite 8 rooms in total | Immaculately clean and simply decorated quaint old bed and breakfast. Matt and I really liked the simplicity of the white, uncluttered rooms and the charming quilts. Centrally located on the same street as the Melville House and Vanderbilt Hall. |
| Sanford-Covell Villa Marina 72 Washington Street Tel: 401 847 0206 Might have a 2 night minimum, ranging from $165 to $395 for a family "apartment" | Matt loves this beautiful old house right on the Newport Harbor that was built by a cabinet-maker (the woodwork is breathtaking). This bed and breakfast has an intimate feel, many curios including a twin set of stuffed peacocks, exquisite restoration of the original hand-painting on the walls, a salt water pool and a small gazebo over the Harbor. Not as high-end as it might sound, this is a nice choice for a slightly eccentric bed and breakfast weekend. |
| Sarah Kendall
House circa 1871 47 Washington Street Tel: 401 846 7976 3 night minimum, ranging from $145 to $235 6 rooms, including a turret room | DO NOT TELL THEM YOU ARE PART OF A WEDDING! No they are not curmudgeons but this innkeeper has an exquisitely decorated house complete with green wicker porch furniture, a hand-painted oriental rug running the length of the steep stairs and a period-proper sitting room. They also have had some very ill-behaved mid-30s wedding guests who thought it was appropriate to have twenty-five people in their room at 1:00am. This is where I would stay if I had great taste, wanted a bed and breakfast experience and knew how to behave! |
| Vanderbilt Hall 41 Mary Street Tel: 401 846 6200 50 rooms, ranging from $195 to $725 3 night minimum | The "in town" rival to Castle Hill, Vanderbilt Hall was originally donated to the town of Newport by the Vanderbilts as a community recreational center. Owned and operated by an English hotelier, Vanderbilt Hall has several original rooms and a more recent addition all decorated whimsically and with great taste. Features a large living room with a fireplace and a slew of armchairs, a morning room, small game room, indoor pool and a billards room. A restaurant, bar and terrace round out the hotel. Very expensive. |
